That “tire shop” smell is all too familiar. Some of those anti-vibration pads are just recycled car tires, I think—definitely not for anyone with a sensitive nose. I get where you’re coming from with the countertop slab and rubber feet; sometimes the simplest fixes work better than the stuff they sell as “specialty.” Just a quick heads-up though, quartz can crack under vibration over time, especially if there’s any uneven weight or if the pump shifts a bit during startup or shutdown cycles. Keep an eye on it for hairline cracks, just in case.

Drilling holes for airflow is a classic move, but I’d nudge folks to double-check what’s behind the cabinet before going at it with a drill. Saw someone hit a hidden wire once—whole place went dark and we had to patch drywall and rewire. Not fun.

One thing I’ve run into: some pumps really need more airflow than you’d expect, especially in tight utility closets. I once had a booster overheat because the vent holes I drilled were too small and got blocked by cleaning supplies. Ended up cutting a bigger vent and adding a cheap grille—no more issues after that.

Curious—did you notice any change in pump performance or temperature after drilling those holes? Sometimes noise drops but heat goes up, depending on how the air moves around in there...

Funny you mention the airflow thing—I've seen more pumps cook themselves in tight cabinets than I care to admit. People think a couple of holes will do it, but if the air can't actually move, it's just a sauna for the motor. I usually tell folks to go bigger on vents than they think they need, and yeah, keep that area clear of junk. As for quartz, totally agree—looks great but not exactly forgiving if things start vibrating. I've seen a few hairline cracks sneak up on people after a year or two. Sometimes the “DIY fix” ends up costing more in the long run...

You nailed it about airflow—people seriously underestimate how much heat those little motors can pump out. I’ve seen folks cut a couple of tiny holes and call it a day, then wonder why their pump’s lifespan is half what it should be. I always say, if you’re not sure, double the vent size you think you need. And yeah, quartz is gorgeous, but it’s not forgiving at all. I had a neighbor who mounted a booster pump under a quartz counter, and after a year, tiny cracks started spidering out. Ended up costing way more to fix than just doing it right the first time. Sometimes “good enough” just isn’t.

Can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard “just tuck it under the sink, it’ll be fine.” Spoiler: it usually isn’t. I learned the hard way with my booster pump install last winter. Thought I was being clever by hiding it behind a panel in the laundry room. Looked tidy, sure, but I didn’t think much about airflow until I noticed the pump was running hot—like, “can’t touch it for more than a second” hot.

Here’s what I ended up doing (and what I wish I’d done first):

1. Measure the space, then assume you need at least twice the venting you think. I cut in a vent panel, then added another after week two. The difference in heat was pretty wild.

2. Don’t put the pump directly under anything stone—quartz, granite, whatever. The vibration is real, and over time it does weird stuff to the countertop. I stuck some thick rubber feet under mine and moved it away from the cabinets just a bit. Not pretty, but it’s quieter and nothing’s cracked (yet).

3. If you’re set on hiding the pump, leave yourself access. You don’t want to dismantle half your cabinetry every time you need to clean the filter or check for leaks.

4. The “good enough” approach is tempting, but every shortcut seemed to come back to bite me. I had to redo the plumbing once already because a quick push-fit fitting started leaking. Not my finest moment.

Funny thing—my neighbor told me he ignored the airflow thing too, and his booster didn’t even last a year. Sometimes it feels like there’s a secret club for people who learn these lessons the hard way.

Anyway, if I had to do it again, I’d probably just over-engineer everything from the start and save myself a ton of hassle. Live and learn, right?

Totally get what you mean about shortcuts coming back to haunt you. I tried to save time by using those push-fit fittings too, and one started leaking behind my wall after a few months—ended up way more work than if I’d just sweated the joints in the first place. Curious, did you notice any difference in noise level after adding the extra venting? Mine’s still a bit of a hum even with rubber feet, so I’m wondering if airflow helps with that too or if it’s just the nature of these pumps.
