Why does my hot water sometimes sound like popcorn?

That popcorn noise is classic mineral buildup, yeah. I get why folks want to flush more often, but honestly, over-flushing can stir up more trouble than it solves—especially with older tanks. Ever notice if the sound gets worse after heavy use or just randomly? Sometimes it’s just the sediment shifting around, not a sign of imminent failure. I’ve seen people try to “fix” it and end up with leaks or stuck valves... not worth it unless you’re sure what you’re dealing with.

That’s been my experience too—sometimes a “quick fix” just leads to more headaches. I’d add that if your tank’s older, flushing can actually loosen up rust or weaken fittings. I usually just monitor the noise unless it gets noticeably louder or the hot water starts running out faster than usual. If you’re not seeing leaks or pressure issues, it’s probably just sediment shifting around. Safety first—don’t mess with valves unless you really know what you’re doing.

Same here. I tried draining my old tank once to get rid of the popcorn sound and ended up with a leaky drain valve—cost me more to fix than just ignoring the noise. As long as you’re not losing hot water or seeing rust in it, I’d leave it alone. Sometimes “fixing” is just asking for trouble, especially on a budget.

That’s been my experience too—sometimes trying to “fix” a noisy tank just opens a whole new can of worms. I remember helping my uncle drain his water heater last year, thinking we’d clear out the sediment and quiet things down. Ended up snapping the old drain valve clean off and had to run out for parts. Unless you’re seeing rusty water or your hot showers are getting shorter, that popcorn sound is usually harmless. I guess it’s just mineral buildup popping around in there... kind of annoying, but not worth the hassle unless it gets worse.

Yeah, I hear you on that—sometimes trying to fix a minor annoyance just leads to a bigger headache (and a lighter wallet). I’ve had the same popcorn noise for years and honestly, as long as the water’s hot and clear, I just let it be. Those old drain valves are notorious for breaking, too... not worth the risk unless there’s an actual problem.
