Ended up finding a clog and a bunch of gunk in there.

Yeah, I’ve noticed a musty smell sometimes, but never anything super strong. Usually it’s just a hint of mildew before things get gross. Did you notice any water pooling around the unit, or was it just the smell?

Didn’t see any water pooling, just that weird smell creeping in. I always check around the base for damp spots, though—mildew can sneak up fast. If you ever spot moisture, I’d shut it off and check the drain line right away. Better safe than sorry.

Had that happen last year—no puddles, just this musty funk that wouldn’t quit. Turned out the drain pan was barely tilted, so water wasn’t flowing out right. Fixed the slope and the smell cleared up. Sometimes it’s the little stuff that gets ya.

Funny how it’s always the tiniest thing, right? I had a similar issue, but mine was more of a “why does my living room smell like wet socks?” situation. Turns out, my filter was overdue for a swap and the humidity in the house just made everything worse. I’m all about keeping things running as eco-friendly as possible, so I try to avoid blasting the heat unless it’s freezing. But when that musty smell hit, I caved and did a deep clean—filters, vents, even checked the ducts for any sneaky mold.

Honestly, sometimes I think these systems are just waiting for us to let our guard down. One minute you’re saving energy, next minute you’re crawling under the unit with a flashlight and a screwdriver. At least fixing the little stuff yourself saves some cash (and maybe a headache or two).

Man, the “wet socks” smell is the worst. You’d think something so tiny like a filter could cause such a stink, but it always does. I’m with you—nothing like crawling around in the dust to make you question your life choices. I always tell folks, check the condensate drain line too. Sometimes that thing gets gunked up and you get a science experiment growing in there. Ever had to unclog one of those? It’s not glamorous, but it beats paying for a service call.
