KEEPING THE HEAT ON: DOES REGULAR FILTER CLEANING REALLY MATTER?

“why does it smell like old socks in here?”

Man, that line got me. I tried the washable ones too, thinking I’d save a few bucks, but after scrubbing them in the driveway and still catching a whiff of something funky, I gave up. My uncle always said, “Cheap out on filters, pay double on repairs.” Not sure if that’s 100% true, but my furnace hasn’t quit on me since I started swapping pleated filters every couple months. Sometimes it’s just not worth the hassle, you know?

OLD SOCKS SYNDROME: FILTERS AREN’T JUST FOR SHOW

That “old socks” smell is a classic. Nine times out of ten, it’s either a dirty filter or some kind of gunk building up on the coils. I’ve seen folks try to stretch those washable filters way past their prime, thinking they’re saving cash, but honestly, once they get that funk, it’s nearly impossible to get them back to fresh.

Here’s my quick-and-dirty rundown for anyone still on the fence:

1. Check your filter every month. If it looks gray or you can’t see light through it, swap it out.
2. Washables are fine if you’re diligent, but most people (myself included) get lazy and let them go too long.
3. Pleated disposable filters catch more dust and are less hassle—just toss and replace.
4. If you smell mildew or socks, check for standing water around your furnace or AC coils too. Sometimes it’s not just the filter.

I get wanting to save money, but a $10 filter every couple months beats an $800 blower motor repair any day. Learned that one the hard way...

CAN’T ARGUE WITH THE MATH

You nailed it with the $10 filter vs. $800 repair comparison. I’ve had tenants swear up and down that “it’s just a little dust,” then call me in a panic when the heat cuts out mid-January. I get being frugal, but filters are one of those corners you just can’t cut for long. I’m not wild about the waste from disposables, but honestly, they’re less hassle and way less risk in my experience. That “old socks” smell is a dead giveaway something’s off—ignore it and you’re just asking for trouble down the line.

That smell is like a smoke alarm for HVAC, honestly. Had a call last winter—lady said her heat was “making weird noises and smells like a gym bag.” Pulled out the filter and I swear it looked like a shag carpet. She’d been running it for over a year. Ended up frying the blower motor. Ten bucks every few months beats shelling out for parts and labor, no contest.

You nailed it. Folks underestimate how much damage a clogged filter can do. I’ve seen filters so caked up you could write your name in the dust. People think it’s just about air quality, but it’s really about keeping the system from choking itself out. Ten bucks every few months is nothing compared to replacing a burnt-out motor or cracked heat exchanger. Not glamorous work, but it saves headaches down the road.
