I’ve been wondering if the Sharpie trick works long-term, especially if filters get dusty or damp—does the date stay readable?

Haha, the Sharpie trick is great until your handwriting turns into a Rorschach test after a few months. I tried it once and the date was basically a smudge by the time I swapped the filter. I switched to sticky notes on the furnace door—low tech but at least they don’t get fuzzy.

As for the heating bills, I noticed a tiny drop, but nothing wild. Maybe my old furnace just likes to eat money no matter what I do...

- Tried the Sharpie thing too—looked like I was dating my filters in invisible ink after the first season.
- Sticky notes are genius, but my cat thinks they’re toys... so now I just set a reminder on my phone.
- As for cleaning filters, I swear my allergies get worse if I slack off. Heating bill? Meh, maybe a couple bucks less, but nothing to brag about.

I get what you’re saying about the heating bill not moving much, but I think it depends a lot on the system and how bad the filter gets. Some of these older furnaces or heat pumps really choke up if the filter’s left to rot for too long. I’ve seen some units basically gasping for air because the filter was so caked up, and they’ll run forever just trying to keep up. That can hit your wallet harder than you’d think, especially if you’re running things 24/7 in winter.

Allergy-wise, I’m with you there—if I forget for even a few weeks, my nose lets me know. But I’ve also had folks swear they didn’t notice a difference until their system started making weird noises or shutting off. Guess it’s one of those things where you don’t realize how bad it is until it’s *really* bad.

The Sharpie trick… yeah, that ink fades fast. I’m more of a painter’s tape guy myself—write the date on a strip and slap it right on the frame. At least that way, even if the handwriting goes wonky or dust covers it up, you can peel it off and start fresh next time. Sticky notes don’t last five minutes in my house either (dogs + curious toddlers = disaster).

One thing that gets overlooked: dirty filters can ice up coils or overheat stuff depending on your setup. That’s when repair bills start stacking up, which is way worse than any minor savings on your monthly bill. Not saying everyone needs to clean filters like clockwork, but skipping too many cycles can turn into a real headache down the line.

Curious if anyone else has had a system actually break down from ignoring the filter? Seen it happen more than once in my rounds...

Had a buddy who ignored his filter for almost a year—he thought it was just a “suggestion” from the manual. Ended up with his furnace shutting down mid-January, and the repair guy pulled out a filter that looked like a shag carpet. Cost him way more than a few filters would’ve. I get being forgetful, but after seeing that, I’m on top of it now. The painter’s tape trick is genius, by the way.
