Honestly, I’ve lost count of how many tanks I’ve seen with an inch of rock-hard crud at the bottom. Flushing’s a pain, but it’s way less hassle than replacing a heater early. Ever tried pulling an anode rod that’s welded itself in place? That’s a whole other headache.

- Couldn’t agree more about the anode rod. Once had to use a breaker bar and still nearly twisted the tank.
- Flushing’s annoying, but skipping it just means more sediment, less efficiency, and way more risk for leaks.
- Ever tried using a shop vac through the drain valve after flushing? Sometimes gets that last bit of crud out.
- Curious—anyone actually had luck with those powered anode rods, or are they just hype?
That breaker bar struggle is all too familiar—had one where I thought the whole tank was gonna spin off the floor. Ended up using a cheater pipe and a lot of cursing. As for flushing, yeah, it’s a pain, but skipping it cost me a tank once when sediment built up so bad it started leaking at the bottom seam. Tried the shop vac trick a couple times—works okay if you’re patient, but sometimes you just end up with a wet mess. Those powered anode rods? I’m skeptical. Heard mixed things, and for the price, I’m not sure they’re worth it unless you’ve got really nasty water.
