What does the timing of water-heater relief-valve discharge indicate?
A brief discharge from a water heater’s temperature-and-pressure relief valve seems like something worth understanding, not just wiping up and ignoring. How can you tell whether it’s related to normal thermal expansion or points to excessive pressure, a valve problem, or missing expansion control?
Does the timing matter most: only during heating, or continuing after the heater has stopped? I’d also be interested in whether a few drops versus a sustained flow changes the concern, and whether a pressure-reducing valve or check valve in the plumbing affects the diagnosis. What observations can a homeowner safely make without touching the hot discharge pipe or adjusting the relief valve, and when is it time to call a plumber?
