What clues matter when a gas water-heater burner shuts off early?

If a gas water-heater burner stops before the set temperature is reached, what observations help narrow down whether it relights on its own, the pilot goes out, or a safety control is stopping it? Would the status light or an error code be useful to note?

I’m not sure how much can be learned safely without opening the heater. What can be observed from the outside, and when is it better to stop and call a qualified technician?

If there’s an existing viewing window, note whether the burner goes out and later relights, whether the pilot remains lit, or whether both go out. Record the status-light flashes or displayed code and when they occur; those clues can help a technician, but don’t diagnose the cause by themselves. Don’t open the heater or bypass a control. If you smell gas, leave the area and contact your gas utility from a safe location. If there’s an unusual ignition event or the heater repeatedly shuts down, stop observing and contact a qualified technician.
