Had a similar issue when I first moved into my place. Thought I'd have to replace the whole thermostat, but turns out it was just some dust messing with the sensor. Felt pretty silly after spending hours researching replacements online, haha. You're definitely on the right track—these things can be finicky, but sounds like you've got a solid plan. Good luck!

You're spot on about dust causing sensor issues—seen it plenty of times myself. However, I'd also suggest checking the wiring connections behind the thermostat. Loose or corroded wires can cause intermittent problems that mimic sensor malfunctions. It's a quick check and could save you from unnecessary replacements or service calls. Thermostats rarely fail outright, so always worth ruling out simpler issues first.

Dust is definitely a sneaky culprit. Reminds me of the time my thermostat was acting possessed—randomly turning on and off, temps bouncing all over the place. I was convinced it was toast, ready to drop cash on a fancy new one. Decided to take one last look before heading to the store, and guess what? Turns out one of the batteries had leaked just enough to cause some corrosion on the contacts. A quick clean-up with vinegar and a cotton swab, and suddenly my thermostat was back from the dead.

But yeah, wiring can definitely cause gremlins too. Had a buddy whose thermostat kept resetting itself. After a weekend of frustration and a few choice words, he finally checked behind the panel and found a loose wire barely hanging on. Tightened it up, problem solved instantly.

Speaking of weird thermostat stories... anyone ever had theirs randomly switch from Fahrenheit to Celsius? Happened to me once, and it took me way too long to figure out why my house suddenly felt like Antarctica.

Totally agree on dust and wiring being sneaky troublemakers. A couple more things I've run into myself:

- Thermostat placement matters a lot. Had mine near a sunny window, and it went nuts every afternoon—thought the house was cooking and blasted AC non-stop. Moved it to a hallway away from direct sunlight, and problem solved.

- Another weird one: Wi-Fi interference. If you've got a smart thermostat, sometimes your router or other wireless devices can mess with it. My thermostat kept disconnecting randomly until I switched my router channel. Haven't had an issue since.

- Also, firmware updates can be glitchy. Had mine randomly reset after an auto-update once, and it defaulted back to Celsius too... took me longer than I'd like to admit figuring out how to switch it back.

Usually these issues are quick DIY fixes—no need to call in a pro unless you're dealing with actual wiring damage or something major behind the walls.

This is spot-on. Placement can seriously mess with your thermostat's accuracy. My parents had theirs right above a table lamp (of all places), and every evening when they'd turn the lamp on, the thermostat would think the room was suddenly roasting. Took us forever to figure out why the heat kept shutting off randomly at night.

Also, another sneaky issue I've seen is drafts from wall cavities or behind the thermostat itself. If there's a gap or hole behind it, cold air from inside the wall can trick it into thinking the room is colder than it actually is. A quick fix is sealing up any gaps with some insulation or caulk—usually does the trick without needing to call anyone in.

Firmware updates are definitely hit-or-miss too... I usually wait a few days after release before updating mine, just to see if others report glitches first. Learned that lesson the hard way after an update bricked my thermostat for half a day.
