Sudden cold showers: what am I missing with my heater?

Man, I hear you on the sediment—first time I drained mine, it looked like I was panning for gold with all the gunk that came out. I’ll add: don’t trust the “quick flush” hacks online. Tried one, ended up with a half-clogged valve and a puddle in my garage. Also, if your water’s still cold after all that, check your thermostat settings. Mine got bumped once and I spent a week blaming the elements before realizing it was set to “lukewarm bathwater for penguins.”

- Had a tenant call me once swearing the water heater was shot—turns out it was just the breaker tripped. Easy fix, but I spent an hour troubleshooting before checking the obvious.
- Sediment’s no joke, either. I’ve seen heaters fill up with so much it sounded like popcorn in there. I always do a full flush, never those “quick” hacks... they’re just asking for trouble.
- One more: if you’ve got an old heater, check the dip tube. Had one disintegrate and send cold water straight to the faucet—took forever to figure out.

Funny, I had a similar situation where I was convinced my heater was dying, but it turned out the thermostat just needed a reset. It’s wild how often it’s something simple like a breaker or a loose wire before you get into the expensive fixes.

I totally agree about sediment—my last place had hard water and the tank would gurgle and pop like crazy. Did a full flush every year and it made a huge difference. Those “quick flush” things never seemed to do much for me either.

About the dip tube—never even thought of that until mine started giving lukewarm water out of nowhere.

“Had one disintegrate and send cold water straight to the faucet—took forever to figure out.”
Same here. Took me ages to track it down because everything else looked fine.

One thing I’d add: check your shower mixing valve if you’re still getting cold bursts after ruling out the heater. I replaced mine thinking it was the tank, but it was just a faulty valve mixing in too much cold. Not super expensive, but annoying to diagnose. Anyone else run into that?

Mixing valve issues are sneaky—had one that would randomly blast cold water mid-shower, and I was blaming the heater for weeks. Ended up swapping out the valve and suddenly everything worked again. One thing I’d add: if you’re eco-minded, those old dip tubes can be a pain but replacing them can actually help efficiency a bit. Also, don’t forget to check for leaks around the tank or pipes... sometimes it’s just a slow drip stealing your hot water before it even gets to you.
