Does a traditional water heater need anything special after sitting unused?
After an extended period of low hot-water use, does a traditional tank water heater generally need any special maintenance before returning to normal use, or is it usually enough to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for that model?
I’m wondering whether the answer changes if the heater was left powered and heating versus shut off, and whether any precautions matter before using the hot water again. Would a long idle period alone be a reason to flush the tank, or should maintenance depend on the heater’s guidance and signs of a problem?

A long stretch of low use alone doesn’t automatically call for flushing; follow the manual’s maintenance and restart guidance. Whether it stayed on or was shut off can affect that guidance, but without the heater model there isn’t one universal restart procedure. Water sitting in the plumbing may need to be run until fresh, and the heater’s instructions should guide any additional precautions. If you notice leaks, unusual noise, or persistent discolored water, investigate rather than treating it as routine flushing.
