Rumbling that starts with a gas water heater’s burner

A rumble or popping sound during a gas water heater’s heating cycle can fit sediment at the tank bottom, but the sound alone doesn’t seem enough to pin down the cause. Would it help to note whether it stops when the burner shuts off, and whether it’s a low rumble, sharp pops, or a steady whoosh?

I’m also curious what can be observed safely without removing covers or adjusting the burner or venting. Which signs would make this worth arranging service promptly, rather than simply mentioning at routine maintenance?

The sound isn’t the only thing to watch: soot or scorching around the heater, or water leaking near the burner area, warrants prompt service. If you smell gas, leave the area and contact the gas utility or emergency services from a safe location.
