The flush is stronger when the handle stays down
If a toilet flushes weakly unless the handle is held down, what’s the most useful clue for separating a simple chain adjustment from a worn or mismatched flush-valve part?
I’d start by noting whether the flapper lifts fully and drops promptly, and whether the chain has slack or catches. Does that behavior point more toward the handle linkage, or can a flapper or canister valve still be the issue? The valve style seems important here, so I’d also want to know whether it’s a flapper or a canister before choosing what to inspect or replace.

If the chain is taut or catches before the flapper or canister lifts fully, the handle linkage is the first place to look. If it lifts freely but the valve drops too soon unless you keep holding the handle, suspect the valve itself or whether it matches the toilet. Knowing whether it’s a flapper or canister helps narrow which valve part to inspect.
