Yeah, I totally get what you mean about the cheap plastic. I’ve actually snapped a couple of those button rods just trying to reseat them—didn’t even use that much force. The alignment is so finicky, especially with those little clips that never seem to line up right. Ever had one where the cable gets kinked and then the half flush just stops working altogether? Makes me wonder if the old lever style was just better in some ways...

I’ve run into that cable kink issue a few times, especially with tenants who aren’t gentle with the buttons. It’s like the mechanism just gives up if anything’s even slightly out of place. Do you think it’s more about the design or just the quality of parts these days? I sometimes wonder if it’s worth paying extra for sturdier internals, or if they all end up failing eventually. The old lever style was definitely less fussy, but maybe not as water-efficient... Have you tried swapping brands to see if any hold up better?

I totally get what you mean about the cable kinks. Had a rental where the flush button would stick every other week, and I swear it was like playing whack-a-mole with repairs. Honestly, I think it's a bit of both—design and cheap parts. The newer push-button setups look sleek but seem to have more things that can go wrong. I did try swapping to a different brand once (can’t remember which, but it had a blue float) and it lasted a bit longer, but still eventually started acting up. The old lever ones might not win any beauty contests, but at least you could fix them with a coat hanger and some determination...

Yeah, I’ve noticed the same thing with the newer push-button toilets. Ours looked great when we moved in, but the half flush is just… unreliable. Sometimes it barely does anything, other times it’s fine. I keep thinking maybe I’m not pressing it right, but honestly, it seems like a design flaw more than user error. The old lever ones in my parents’ place just worked, even if they were a bit ugly and clunky.

It’s kind of reassuring to hear it’s not just me struggling with these. I guess the trade-off for a modern look is a bit more hassle. At least with the old-school setups, you could MacGyver a fix without needing special parts. Maybe I’ll just accept that the half flush is more of a suggestion than a real feature...

Honestly, I’ve taken apart a few of those push-button cisterns, and it’s wild how finicky the mechanisms can be. Sometimes the cable or button just isn’t aligned right, or the half-flush valve doesn’t seat perfectly. Even a tiny misalignment can mess up the whole thing. The older lever ones were basically indestructible by comparison—if something went wrong, you could usually just bend a wire or jiggle the flapper and you were back in business. With these modern setups, half flush almost feels like a gamble... I wish they’d make the insides as reliable as the outside looks.
