Half flush never seems to work right - am I missing something?

Honestly, half flushes are hit or miss in a lot of places. Sometimes it’s just the design - some brands just don’t nail it. I’ve seen people try all sorts of tweaks, but if the bowl shape isn’t right, you’re fighting a losing battle. Thinner paper helps, but sometimes you just gotta double flush and move on.

Yeah, that’s been my experience too. Sometimes I’ll get called to “fix” a half flush issue and it’s just the toilet itself. No amount of fiddling with the mechanism helps if the water doesn’t swirl right. I’ve seen folks try everything from adjusting float levels to swapping out flappers, but honestly, some toilets just don’t cooperate. Makes you wonder how these designs even make it past testing...

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve seen people swap out every part except the bowl itself, and they still end up frustrated. It’s wild how much the actual shape and angle of the rim jets matter - if the flow isn’t directed right, you’re just moving water around with no real effect. Sometimes it really is a design flaw, not user error. I’ve even seen some “eco” models that just never worked properly, no matter what you did. Makes you wonder if anyone actually tests these things in real-world conditions...

Honestly, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been called out for a “half flush” issue and it turns out the bowl design is just fighting against you. Folks will swap flappers, adjust fill valves, even replace the whole tank, but if those rim jets aren’t angled right or the bowl’s got a weird contour, you’re never gonna get a proper swirl.

One thing I always check - sometimes overlooked - is mineral buildup in the rim jets. Even a little bit can mess with the flow pattern, especially on those low-flow models. But yeah, some of these so-called eco toilets just don’t have enough engineering behind them. I’ve seen brand new installs where the half flush barely moves anything, no matter what you tweak.

It’s kind of wild that some designs make it to market without real-world testing. I get the push for water savings, but if you have to flush twice every time, what’s the point? Sometimes, you really do just need a better-designed bowl...

I keep running into this with some of the newer dual-flush toilets in my rentals. It’s like, you do all the usual maintenance - check for clogs, clean out the jets, swap out parts - but if the bowl shape is off or those jets are just too small, nothing really helps. I’ve even tried using vinegar to clear mineral buildup, but sometimes it’s just a bad design from the start. Ever notice how some brands seem to get it right and others just... don’t? Makes me wonder if it’s worth paying extra for a better model up front instead of dealing with complaints later.
