Half flush never seems to work right - am I missing something?
Not sure I'd agree that a quick adjustment always solves it. Seen plenty where the float and fill valve are dialed in, but the design just doesn't allow for a strong half flush, no matter what you tweak. Some dual-flush models just don't move enough water for solids, period. If you've tried the basics and it's still weak, sometimes it's just a limitation of the toilet itself. Wouldn't force adjustments past manufacturer specs either - can cause leaks or even damage if you're not careful.

Yeah, learned that one the hard way... tried to get clever with a fill valve once and ended up with a mini Niagara Falls in the bathroom. Not my finest moment.
Honestly, some of these dual-flush toilets just seem like they're designed for people who never eat fiber. You can tweak the float, check the chain, make sure nothing's sticking, but if the half flush is just a sad little trickle, there’s only so much you can do. I always check for obvious stuff first - make sure the holes under the rim aren’t clogged with mineral buildup (had one where a paperclip fixed it), and double-check that the flapper isn’t getting hung up on anything weird.
But yeah, sometimes it’s just a “you get what you get” situation. If you’re following the manual and still getting weak sauce flushes, it might be time to accept defeat - or at least keep a plunger handy.
Yeah, I hear you. Some of these “eco” toilets are more trouble than they’re worth. I’ve had tenants call about weak half flushes, and honestly, sometimes it’s just the design. You can only tweak so much before you’re chasing your tail. At a certain point, it’s either live with it or swap out the whole thing... which isn’t cheap.

Honestly, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve tried adjusting the fill valve or swapping out flappers on these “eco” models, only to get the same weak half flush. Sometimes it’s just a bad match between the tank and the bowl. Out of curiosity, has anyone actually found a brand or model where the half flush works as advertised? Or is this just wishful thinking with these low-flow setups?
I hear you, but I’ve actually had decent luck with a Toto Aquia in my last place. The half flush wasn’t perfect, but it handled most stuff unless someone tried to flush a wad of paper. I think a lot of it comes down to the design - some brands just nail the bowl and trapway better than others. Still, I agree, most of the cheaper “eco” models are just frustrating. Sometimes it feels like you’re saving water only to end up flushing twice anyway... kind of defeats the purpose.
