Half flush never seems to work right—am I missing something?

Honestly, you’re not missing much—half flushes can be finicky, especially with budget models. The mechanism just doesn’t always deliver enough force to clear the bowl, and you end up flushing twice, which kind of defeats the purpose. I’ve seen Toto’s dual flush hold up better than most, but even then, it depends on water pressure and how well the flapper seals. Sometimes a well-designed single flush low-flow toilet is just less hassle in the long run. If you’re set on dual flush, make sure the internal parts are easy to replace... some brands make that a nightmare.

You nailed it—half flushes are like that one coworker who promises to help but never quite delivers. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve had to open up tanks just to jiggle a stuck button or reseat a dodgy seal. The fancier the toilet, the more “unique” the replacement parts, too... Had one client whose dual flush needed a part shipped from overseas. For my money, a solid single flush low-flow is usually less drama, unless you really love a good plumbing puzzle.

Half flushes are such a tease, right? I moved into my place thinking dual flush was the “eco” upgrade but it’s honestly more like a choose-your-own-adventure with questionable outcomes. I’ve tried holding the button, tapping it, even pressing both at once out of desperation. Sometimes it’s just a sad little trickle and then I’m standing there wondering if I need to call a plumber or an exorcist.

Is it just me, or do these things never work as intended? I peeked inside the tank and there are so many weird plastic bits—nothing like the old-school chain and flapper I grew up with. I’m half tempted to swap it for a single flush, but then I feel guilty about the water savings. Has anyone actually gotten a half flush to work consistently, or is it one of those things that looks good on paper but not in real life?

- Had the same issue when I swapped mine out last year.
- Half flush is supposed to save water, but honestly, it barely clears anything unless you’re lucky.
- I tried adjusting the float and fiddling with the mechanism—sometimes it helped, sometimes not.
- The plastic parts inside are a pain compared to the old chain setup.
- Anyone else notice the half flush works better right after you clean the tank? Or is that just me imagining things?
- At this point, I’m wondering if certain brands just do a better job, or if it’s all hype.

Funny you mention the tank cleaning thing—I’ve noticed that too. I always figured it was just me being hopeful after scrubbing out all the gunk, but maybe there’s something to it. I swapped out my old toilet for a dual flush last winter and honestly, the half flush is hit or miss. Sometimes it barely moves anything, other times it’s fine. I’ve tried tweaking the float and even swapped out the seal once, but those plastic parts just don’t seem as reliable as the old metal ones. I’m starting to think some brands just cheap out on the internals...
