That weird hissing sound behind the bathroom door...

That “better safe than soggy” line nails it. Water damage creeps up on you, and by the time you spot the real problem, it’s already a mess. I’ve seen folks chalk up weird sounds to “just the house settling” or air in the pipes, but ignoring that stuff can get expensive fast.

Had a similar thing happen with a faint hiss behind our laundry wall—turned out to be a slow leak at a valve, and it soaked right through into the next room before we caught it. Drywall was mushy, baseboards had to go, and the smell... yikes.

Curious if anyone’s ever had a situation where the sound turned out to be something harmless? Or is it pretty much always trouble when you hear hissing near plumbing? Sometimes I wonder if I’m being paranoid checking every little noise, but after dealing with water damage once, I’m not taking chances.

Totally get where you’re coming from—after one water damage incident, I’m on edge about any weird noise near pipes. One time I traced a faint hiss to the toilet fill valve just being a bit loose, so it wasn’t a disaster, but it still needed fixing. Makes me wonder if there’s an eco-friendly way to monitor for leaks before they get out of hand... anyone tried those water sensors or smart shut-off valves? I’m tempted, but not sure if they’re worth the hassle.
