Drips from the box vs. leaks at the connections—what’s worse?

I get where you’re coming from—sometimes tech just feels like more hassle. But honestly, I installed a couple of those smart leak sensors after a tiny drip under my fridge turned into a nightmare. Thing is, I travel for work, so regular checks aren’t always an option. The sensor pinged my phone before any musty smell or visible water showed up, and I caught it early. Maybe it’s overkill if you’re home a lot, but for folks who aren’t, it’s been a game-changer.

Had a customer last year with a slow drip at the connection—by the time he noticed, his subfloor was toast. I’m old school, still double-check by hand, but gotta admit, those sensors catch what eyes miss. Tech’s not perfect, but neither are we.

I had a similar situation a few months back—guy thought the stain on his ceiling was just old watermarks, but it turned out to be a slow leak from a compression fitting. By the time we got there, the insulation and some of the joists were already compromised. I still trust my eyes and hands most days, but those sensors are catching stuff even pros miss. It's not about replacing experience, just adding another layer of protection. Sometimes tech actually saves us from bigger headaches down the line... even if it means more beeping in the middle of the night.

That’s the key right there. I’ve seen more damage from slow leaks at fittings than from box drips, honestly. A box drip is usually obvious and gets attention fast, but a sneaky compression fitting can rot out a ceiling before anyone notices. Sensors are a pain with their alerts, but I’d rather get woken up than find mold months later. Still, nothing beats getting your hands on the pipe and checking for that telltale dampness. Tech’s great, but it’s not infallible—just another tool in the kit.
