Drips from the box vs. leaks at the connections—what’s worse?

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from—hidden leaks are a nightmare for sure, but I almost feel like visible drips can be just as bad, depending on where they’re happening. Like, I had a slow drip from the shutoff valve under my bathroom sink (just a tiny little bead every few minutes), and I figured, “Okay, no big deal, I’ll get to it next weekend.” Well, next weekend turned into a small puddle, and then I realized the water had been seeping into the cabinet base the whole time. Ended up with a warped cabinet and some moldy-smelling particle board. Not quite behind drywall, but still a pain.

I guess what I’m saying is, even when you *see* the leak, it’s easy to underestimate how much damage it can do if you don’t jump on it right away. The “out of sight, out of mind” thing works both ways—sometimes I think I convince myself a small drip is less urgent just because it’s not hidden. But water always finds a way to mess things up if you give it time.

About those rubber gaskets—I’ve wondered about that too. Maybe it’s just the cheap ones that go first? Or maybe they dry out faster if you don’t use the valve much... I don’t know. I’ve started replacing them any time I touch the connections now, just in case.

Still, I totally get the paranoia about hidden stuff. I feel like I’m always poking around behind appliances or checking for soft spots on the wall. It’s exhausting, but after hearing horror stories about people having to rip up their floors, it’s hard not to be a little obsessive.

Yeah, I learned that lesson the hard way with my washing machine hookup. Thought a tiny drip was “no big deal” until I noticed the baseboard swelling up. Turns out, water + particle board = instant regret. Now I keep a flashlight in the bathroom just for checking under sinks... feels a little paranoid, but after one moldy surprise, I’m not taking chances. Those gaskets are sneaky too—sometimes they look fine but are totally brittle inside.
