I used to think the same—just plug it in and forget about it, right? Learned the hard way after a minor basement flood. For corrosion, I mostly just check for any rust or weird buildup on the pump housing and float switch. If it looks crusty or smells off, that’s usually a sign. As for water alarms, I actually grabbed a cheap one after my flood incident. It’s gone off once (false alarm from condensation), but honestly, I’d rather have the peace of mind than risk another soggy carpet. Not essential, but they’re not a total gimmick either.
- That’s interesting about the water alarms. I’ve been debating if they’re worth it or just another gadget.

“It’s gone off once (false alarm from condensation), but honestly, I’d rather have the peace of mind than risk another soggy carpet.”
- Makes sense, but I’m a little worried about false alarms driving me nuts.
- For corrosion, is it normal to see a bit of rust on the pump? Mine’s got some orange spots but nothing major—should I be worried or just keep an eye on it?
- Also, do you guys actually test your sump pumps, or just wait for a storm and hope for the best? I feel like I should be doing more but not sure what’s overkill.
