What should a sump-pump replacement quote spell out?

What details help you compare a like-for-like sump-pump replacement with a quote that includes changes to the pit, discharge line, or electrical connection?

I’d want to know the pump’s capacity and specifications, what work is included, and what specific finding would make each extra necessary rather than optional. For example, what evidence would justify changing the pit or discharge line instead of replacing only the pump? How do you keep estimates comparable when contractors propose different scopes?

I’d put the quotes into two columns: the common pump-and-replacement work, then each proposed pit, discharge-line, or electrical change with its reason and separate price. That way, a higher total doesn’t look like a higher price for the same replacement. If one contractor says a change is necessary and another leaves it out, compare the stated finding behind that line item before comparing totals.

The scope comparison is clearest once there’s a shared pump baseline. I’d compare the proposed model - or a documented equivalent - and its capacity under the stated conditions; if those differ, treat that as a separate difference rather than assuming the higher quote reflects only extra work. Then the pit, line, and electrical items can be judged on their own.
