What can I safely check if a sump-pump float seems stuck?
If a sump pump hums as the water rises but doesn’t start, what can be checked with power disconnected to tell whether the float is visibly obstructed or the problem needs electrical testing? Is it enough to see whether the float moves freely, or is there another safe observation that helps narrow it down?
I’d also like to know what signs mean it’s time to stop troubleshooting and call a professional, rather than risk shock or a flooded pit.

With power disconnected at the breaker or unplugged only if the plug and outlet are dry and safely accessible, look from outside the pit for debris or anything visibly blocking the float’s travel. Don’t reach into standing water or open electrical parts. A float that moves freely rules out an obvious obstruction, not a switch, wiring, or pump fault; those need proper testing. Stop if wiring looks damaged, you can’t be sure power is off, or water is rising toward electrical components, and call a qualified professional.
