Just noticed some dampness around my sump pump area, and um, got me thinking—how do most of you usually figure out there's a leak? Poll below, curious to see what everyone's doing.

1. Visual inspection (wet spots, puddles)
2. Weird noises
3. Higher water bill
4. Smell/mustiness
5. Other (share below!)

Higher water bills usually aren't a reliable sign for sump pump leaks—those pumps handle groundwater, not your household supply. I'd trust visual checks or weird noises way more... maybe even the musty smell.

Had a similar scare last spring—noticed a weird humming noise from the basement and a faint musty smell. Thought it was nothing at first, but when I checked, the sump pit was almost overflowing. Definitely agree water bills aren't helpful here... visual checks saved me from a bigger mess. Still, I'm skeptical about relying solely on smells or noises; sometimes they're subtle enough to miss until it's too late.
