What if your street flooded because drains were clogged?

I get tempted every time I see leaves piled up, but I’m never quite sure where to draw the line.

Same here—every fall I end up staring at those drains, rake in hand, debating it. Has anyone actually had the city come after them for clearing debris? Or is that more of a theoretical risk? I always wonder if just removing the surface leaves is fine, but what if there’s something deeper blocking it... do you just leave it alone at that point?

I’ve wondered the same thing. Here’s how I usually handle it:

- I’ll clear the leaves off the surface, just enough so water can get through. City’s never said anything, and I doubt they’re patrolling for that.
- If there’s something deeper or heavy blocking it, I leave it. Don’t want to mess with city infrastructure or risk making it worse.
- Honestly, I think they care more if you’re dumping stuff in than taking it out.

Just my two cents… haven’t heard of anyone getting in trouble for helping out.

I’ve done the same—just clear off the leaves and let the water drain. I figure as long as you’re not prying up grates or messing with anything mechanical, it’s fine. Once, after a big storm, I tried to move a branch that was wedged in and realized it was heavier than it looked... ended up just calling the city. They actually thanked me for reporting it. I think they’d rather folks help out a bit than let the street flood. Just don’t go overboard, you know?

Yeah, clearing off the leaves is usually all you need to do. I always tell people—don’t try to lift anything big or mess with the grate itself. That’s how folks end up hurting their backs or worse. If it looks stuck or heavy, just let the city handle it. They’ve got the gear (and insurance) for a reason.

Honestly, I’ve seen tenants try to “help” by prying up the whole grate—usually ends with a call to me or worse, a trip to urgent care. Clearing leaves is fine, but if it’s anything more than that, I’d rather deal with a little water than a lawsuit or a busted back. Anyone actually had the city respond quickly, though? Half the time it feels like you’re waiting for rain in the desert...
