Limited roof space for solar hot water

With limited roof area, how do you decide whether to use it for a solar-thermal collector loop or PV panels powering a heat-pump water heater? I’m curious how roof orientation and partial shade affect the comparison, and whether one option is more forgiving when the available roof space isn’t ideal.

The systems also seem to bring different changes indoors: solar thermal needs its collector loop and storage, while the PV route means electrical integration and a heat-pump water heater. How do backup heating, plumbing or electrical work, and ongoing maintenance compare in practice? I’m especially interested in the likely failure points and what makes one setup a better fit for a household’s hot-water use, without assuming either will automatically cost less over its lifetime.

If roof space or exposure is imperfect, I’d lean toward PV powering a heat-pump water heater, provided there’s still a reasonably sunny area for the panels. PV isn’t immune to shade, but it seems less tied to fitting a dedicated collector loop onto the best roof section. If the usable area is heavily shaded, though, I wouldn’t treat either solar option as an easy fit.
