Sometimes the real issue is a slow wastewater leak hiding behind baseboards or under flooring.

Totally agree with this. I once had a “mystery smell” in my old place that drove me nuts for weeks. Turned out the leak was actually two rooms over from where the odor was strongest—water had traveled along the joists and pooled under some laminate. Never would’ve found it if I hadn’t started poking around with a screwdriver like you mentioned.

One thing I’d add: don’t underestimate how much those old cast iron pipes can corrode from the inside out. Sometimes you’ll get pinhole leaks that barely show on the outside, but they’re enough to keep things damp and stinky. And yeah, moisture meters are great, but sometimes your nose and a little bit of stubbornness go further.

Also, if you’ve got carpet anywhere near the affected area, just pull it up. It’s almost impossible to get that smell out once it’s soaked in. Learned that one the hard way...

- That “nose and stubbornness” combo is spot on. I’ve spent way too many hours crawling around with a flashlight, convinced the smell was coming from one corner, only to find the real culprit halfway across the room. Water just does its own thing under floors.

- About those cast iron pipes—couldn’t agree more. People think if they look solid on the outside, they’re fine, but nope. I’ve seen pipes that looked okay until you tapped them and your screwdriver went straight through. Sometimes you get that black sludge buildup too, which just adds to the fun.

- On carpet: yeah, once it’s soaked with that stuff, it’s game over. Even if you clean it, the padding underneath is usually toast. I tried to save a rug once with every cleaner under the sun... ended up just tossing it.

- One thing I’d add—don’t forget to check behind built-ins or under stairs if you’re chasing a smell. Water loves to hide in the weirdest places.

Funny how something as simple as a bad smell can turn into a full-blown detective mission...
