What makes a sewer lateral a poor candidate for trenchless repair?

Trenchless methods can spare much of a yard from being dug up, but they still need suitable access and a pipe that can support the chosen method. What findings would make you rule them out in favor of open excavation?

I’m especially curious how pipe material and the pattern of damage affect eligibility, and how bends, access points, or buried utilities change what’s practical. For a line that is suitable, how much of the lawn or other surface usually still needs to be disturbed for access and restoration? I’d like to understand what should guide the choice, rather than treating trenchless as the default.
