How useful is a brief water-heater setback between winter bookings?

For a rental that’s empty for just a few days between guests, does lowering the water-heater setting usually save enough standby heat to be worthwhile, or can the slower recovery make the next turnover awkward?

I’d expect the answer to depend on the heater type and its controls, but I’m not sure how much that changes recovery time in practice. For a short vacancy, would you leave the normal setting alone or use a manufacturer-approved setback? And what temperature and safety guidance should take priority when choosing a setting? I’m thinking of a brief gap between bookings, not shutting down or winterizing the property.
