I’ve had tenants swear up and down that root barriers would solve everything, but I’ve seen those redbud roots snake right under or around them like they’re on a mission. I’m with you—sometimes you just have to accept it’s a losing battle and plant stuff that can hold its own. Mulch helps, sure, but I’ve found it’s more about lowering expectations than winning the war. Those roots always seem to find a way, don’t they?

I totally get where you’re coming from—those roots are relentless. I tried one of those heavy-duty plastic barriers last fall, followed every instruction, and still found little root tips poking through the seams this spring. I’ve been nervous about them getting into the foundation or pipes, honestly. Has anyone actually had long-term luck with a specific type of barrier or is it just wishful thinking? I keep wondering if I should just dig up the whole bed and start over with raised planters...

I’ve dealt with this a few times on different properties, and honestly, plastic barriers rarely hold up for more than a couple years—roots always seem to find the tiniest gap. I’ve had better luck with reinforced concrete edging, but it’s a bigger project and not cheap. Raised planters can be a good workaround if you’re mainly worried about roots damaging infrastructure. It’s a bit of work upfront, but at least you know exactly what you’re dealing with. If you’re losing sleep over the foundation, it might be worth considering a more permanent fix like that.

Totally agree with you there. I’ve seen roots squeeze through spots you’d swear were sealed tight. Concrete edging is solid, but man, it’s a commitment. Have you ever tried one of those root barrier fabrics? I’m curious if they’re any better long-term or just another short-term fix. Roots are relentless... makes me wonder if certain tree species are just more trouble than others.

Definitely noticed maples and willows are the worst offenders on my properties. Haven’t had much luck with root barrier fabrics—seems like they just slow things down, not stop it. I’m always worried about roots messing with foundations or pipes. Anyone ever had to remove a tree entirely because of this, or is that overkill?
