"roots seem to have minds of their own sometimes..."
Yeah, no kidding. I've seen roots squeeze through tiny cracks you'd swear were impossible. Even PVC joints aren't always safe—once saw roots worm their way into a glued joint. Makes you wonder what else they're capable of...

Yeah, that's crazy but totally believable. Had something similar happen at our place a couple years back. We had this huge maple tree in the front yard, beautiful shade and all, but man... those roots were relentless. They managed to sneak into our sewer line through what seemed like the tiniest gap imaginable. I mean, you'd think a glued joint would be secure enough, right? Nope, apparently not.
We ended up having to call out a plumber twice before finally biting the bullet and replacing a section of pipe. Not exactly cheap, but honestly, it was worth it just to stop worrying about backups every few months. The plumber told us that roots are attracted to moisture and nutrients leaking from even microscopic cracks, so they'll keep pushing until they find a way in. Nature's pretty impressive when you think about it—annoying, sure, but impressive.
One thing we learned the hard way: those root-killing chemicals you pour down the drain? They're okay as a temporary fix, but they don't really solve the underlying issue. Eventually, the roots grow back stronger and thicker. So yeah, if you're dealing with persistent root invasions, it's probably best to tackle the problem head-on rather than relying on quick fixes.
Glad you finally got yours sorted out though. Feels good when you can finally stop worrying about what's lurking underground...

Yeah, PVC joints aren't foolproof. Had roots bust through a glued joint myself—thought it was sealed tight, but nope. Ended up switching to gasketed fittings; they've held up better so far. Curious if anyone's tried trenchless pipe lining methods instead of full replacements?
Had a similar issue a couple years back—roots got into the PVC line and caused a nasty backup. Thought about trenchless lining, but after some digging (pun intended), I wasn't totally convinced about the long-term safety of the materials they use. Ended up going with gasketed fittings too, plus installed root barriers around the pipes. Been good so far, fingers crossed...
Went through something similar last spring—roots invaded our old clay pipes. Considered trenchless too, but like you, wasn't totally sold on the materials. Ended up replacing sections with gasketed fittings and planted native shrubs nearby as a natural barrier...so far, nature seems cooperative.
