I hear you on the flex cable—mine nearly took out a light fixture once. Here’s what’s worked for me: I map out where the main line runs, then keep any new trees at least 15 feet away. If you’re stuck with existing trees, annual root cutting (yeah, it’s a pain) plus foaming root killer seems to keep things manageable. Shade’s great, but not if you’re calling the plumber every six months...
