Dealing with tree roots in the drain line is honestly one of those homeowner headaches I never thought I’d have. Anyway, here’s how I tackled it step by step: First, I tried the classic boiling water trick—no dice. Then I rented a drain snake (the manual kind, not the fancy motorized one) and fed it down the cleanout. Took a bit of elbow grease, but I could feel it breaking through some of the blockage. After that, I poured a foaming root killer down the pipe (the copper sulfate stuff), let it sit overnight, and flushed with lots of water the next day. It’s been a few months and so far, no backups. But honestly, I’m not sure if this is a long-term fix or just a band-aid. Has anyone tried hydro jetting or some other method that actually keeps roots away for good? Or maybe there’s a preventative thing I’m missing? Would love to hear what’s worked (or not worked) for others.

Honestly, I think you made the right call getting the camera inspection before hydro jetting. That’s one step a lot of folks skip, and it can save a ton of trouble (and money) if there’s hidden damage. I get what you mean about the physical barriers—digging in clay is brutal. But like you said:

“after last year’s mess, I’m not taking chances.”

Same here. I’d rather put in the work up front than deal with another backup. Chemical barriers always make me uneasy, especially near veggies. Physical’s more work, but less risk in the long run.
