Metal tags are the MVP, for sure. I’ve tried every “high temp” sticker under the sun and they all end up on the floor eventually.
—yep, been there. Doubling up with a tag and label is smart, especially for shutoffs. It’s a pain, but better than getting a call at 2am because someone couldn’t find the right valve.labels stuck to the floor instead of the pipe

I hear you on the stickers—tried a “high temp” one last year and it lasted about two weeks before it was just a sticky mess on the floor. Metal tags are the only thing that’s survived my basement humidity and the occasional pipe knock. I get the “doubling up” thing, but honestly, if the tag is clear and doesn’t fall off, I don’t bother with the label anymore. Less to peel off later, right?
Metal tags are definitely the way to go—stickers just can’t handle the heat or moisture, no matter what the packaging says. I’ve seen some folks use zip ties with engraved tags, which seems to hold up even better. Curious if anyone’s had luck with paint markers for labeling? I tried it once and it faded pretty quick, but maybe there’s a trick I missed.
I’ve tried paint markers a couple times, thinking they’d be a quick fix, but honestly, they never lasted more than a few months before fading or rubbing off. Maybe there’s some industrial-grade marker out there I haven’t found, but for me, engraved tags are just way more reliable. I like the zip tie method too—just make sure you’re not cinching them too tight around anything that might expand or contract with temperature changes. Learned that the hard way on a hot water line...

That’s a good point about expansion. I’ve seen zip ties bite right into PEX after a few seasons, especially on hot runs. For labeling, I’ve had better luck with stainless steel cable ties and engraved tags—no fading, and they hold up even in mechanical rooms. If you ever need temporary markings, I’ve found wax pencils last longer than paint markers, but still not ideal for permanent setups.
