Last winter, I tried rolling up old towels and stuffing them along the baseboards—looked ridiculous but kept the drafts out (sort of).

I’ve done that towel trick too, and yeah, it’s not pretty. But honestly, it’s just a band-aid. I finally bit the bullet last fall and put in proper insulation under my floors—nothing fancy, just batts from the hardware store. The difference was night and day. My heating bill dropped way more than I expected, and no more cold feet in the morning. If you’re tired of patch jobs, it’s worth making time for the real thing.

Insulating under the floors really is a game changer. I did it a couple years back—crawling around under there wasn’t fun, but it’s wild how much warmer the house feels. If you’re on the fence, it’s worth the hassle. Draft stoppers never quite cut it for me either... just felt like I was chasing cold spots all winter.

- Totally agree, insulating under the floors made a bigger difference than I expected.
- Just a heads up for anyone thinking about it—watch out for old wiring or pipes when you’re crawling around down there.
- I wore a respirator and gloves because you never know what’s lurking in those crawlspaces...
- For me, taping seams and sealing gaps was just as important as the insulation itself. Missed spots can still let in drafts.
- Draft stoppers are fine for doors, but yeah, they don’t really fix the root problem.
- If you’re not comfortable with tight spaces or have any doubts, might be safer to get a pro in—no shame in that.

Crawlspaces are like the wild west of home maintenance—never know what you’ll find under there. I once slid in to insulate a client’s floor and ended up face-to-face with a family of very unimpressed spiders. Made me rethink my life choices for a second. But yeah, sealing those seams is huge. I’ve seen folks slap up insulation and call it a day, then wonder why their toes are still freezing. Gotta do the details or you’re just giving drafts a VIP pass. And if you’re not into tight spaces or mystery critters, no shame in calling someone else—been there myself more than once...

Not gonna lie, I get the whole “seal every seam” thing, but sometimes it feels like overkill—especially if your crawlspace is already dry and you’re not dealing with crazy drafts. I just stapled up batt insulation under my place last winter, didn’t bother with foam or tape, and honestly? My floors are warmer and my bill barely budged. Maybe it’s not perfect, but for the price, I’ll take “good enough” over pro-level any day. Guess it depends how picky you are...
