how often do you get your radiant heat system checked out?

Okay, so I was chatting with my neighbor yesterday about heating systems (exciting stuff, I know...), and turns out he's never had his radiant floor heating looked at since it got installed like five years ago. Um, that seems kinda long to me? I usually have someone come by every two years or so just to make sure everything's working smoothly and avoid any nasty surprises down the road.

Anyway, quick poll—how often do you folks get yours checked, if at all?

I usually do mine every year or two...mostly because I'm paranoid about efficiency and hate surprise repair bills. Plus, keeping it tuned up helps keep my energy footprint smaller—win-win, right?

I'm probably a bit lazier than you about scheduling regular checks, but I totally get the paranoia about surprise repairs. Last winter, our radiant system decided to quit on us right when temps dropped below freezing—talk about timing. Ended up costing way more than a routine check would've. Now I'm thinking yearly might be smarter... Do you notice a big difference in your bills after each tune-up?

Yeah, learned that lesson the hard way too. Can't say my bills drop dramatically after a tune-up, but the system definitely runs smoother—less weird noises and random cold spots. Worth it for peace of mind alone, honestly...

I used to be pretty lax about this myself, honestly. But after dealing with a tenant complaint about uneven heating and weird knocking sounds a few winters back, I started scheduling routine checks every two years. It's not like the system was failing or anything, but the tech found some minor air pockets and a valve that wasn't fully opening. Once those were sorted out, tenants said the heat felt way more consistent.

Agree with what's been said already—it's not necessarily a huge money saver upfront, but definitely saves headaches down the line. Plus, if you're renting out your place, having a documented maintenance history can help if disputes ever come up about heating issues. Learned that one from experience too...
