Hose-bib vacuum breaker keeps dripping after shutoff
A drip from a hose-bib vacuum breaker seems different if it happens only while water is flowing versus continuing after the faucet is shut off. How do you tell normal drainage from a breaker that’s stuck or leaking?
Does it matter whether the breaker is built into the hose bib or threaded onto it? I’d also like to know what’s safe to check before replacing one, especially around the hose connection, without compromising the backflow protection.

A brief discharge while water is running can occur as a breaker operates, but dripping that continues after shutoff - once pressure has settled - points more toward a leaking or stuck part than normal drainage. The details vary by model. Whether it is built in or threaded on changes how it is serviced, not the need to protect it: with the water off, look for visible damage and check that the hose connection’s washer is present and seated. Don’t dismantle, plug, or bypass the breaker; follow the model’s instructions for replacement or call a plumber if the leak persists.
