I'm redoing my bathroom and got into a bit of a debate with my brother-in-law. He's all about following plumbing codes to the letter, even if it seems kinda overkill. Me, I think sometimes common sense and practicality should win out, you know? Like, if something works fine and is safe, why jump through hoops just because the code says so? Curious what others think—stick strictly to the book or trust your gut sometimes?

I'm kinda torn on this one. As a new homeowner, codes feel like a safety net—but sometimes they do seem a bit much. Maybe it's about knowing when you can flex and when you shouldn't risk it...?

Yeah, that's the tricky part. When we bought our place, I found some plumbing that was clearly DIY'd—not exactly up to code but honestly worked fine. Left me wondering how much of the code is just cautious overkill versus what's genuinely crucial. Ever had a situation where following code saved you from a bigger headache later on, or maybe ignoring it came back to bite you?
