Small water-meter movement after a quiet period
Does a meter need to stay completely still during a quiet period to rule out a plumbing leak, or can brief equipment use, such as an ice maker filling or a softener regenerating, cause intermittent movement? I’m curious how to distinguish those short draws from continuous leakage without treating movement alone as proof of a hidden leak.
Would it help to repeat the check when those systems aren’t running, or is there a more reliable way to tell the difference?

No - the meter needn’t stay still if an ice maker or softener draws water during the check; that brief movement alone doesn’t show a continuous leak. Repeat the check during a period when those devices and other water uses are inactive. Movement that persists then is a reason to investigate further, but it still isn’t proof by itself.
