Meter indicator moves outside the irrigation schedule

If a water meter’s leak indicator moves while indoor fixtures are off, but there’s also an irrigation system on the property, what’s the safest way to narrow down which side is using water?

I’d want to know whether the movement lines up with a scheduled irrigation cycle, and whether it continues when irrigation is disabled. Is there a straightforward way to isolate the irrigation supply without risking damage to the valves or system? I’m also curious what meter behavior would be useful to share with a plumber or irrigation technician if the movement happens at unexpected times.

Compare the meter’s movement with the irrigation schedule, then pause irrigation using its normal controller and check again while indoor fixtures remain off. If you know which irrigation isolation valve serves the system and it turns normally, closing it briefly can help distinguish the supply; don’t force an uncertain or stuck valve. A stopped indicator points toward irrigation use, while continued movement doesn’t rule out a leaking irrigation valve. Note the times and what was on or disabled for a plumber or irrigation technician.
