How long should a water meter be watched with everything off?
A meter that moves briefly with fixtures off seems different from one that keeps advancing steadily, but I’m not sure how long an observation needs to be before it’s meaningful. How do you distinguish ongoing water use from a small movement that settles?
Toilets can refill, and appliances such as ice makers may draw water intermittently, so “everything off” might not rule out a normal draw. What’s a useful way to account for those cycles during a check, and what kind of continued meter movement would make you start investigating for a leak?
