What should a kitchen sink drain-pipe quote spell out?

If a plumber can’t tell how far a kitchen sink drain leak or deterioration extends until the piping is exposed, how should the quote handle that uncertainty?

I’d want the base price to name the pipe sections and materials included, and say whether access, removal and disposal, and leak testing are covered. If a connection is seized or more damage is found behind the visible section, should those be separate, clearly priced options that need approval before the work expands? It’d also help to know when a targeted repair is being priced separately from replacing a broader section, rather than assuming the whole drain line needs replacement.

Yes. The base price should define the work included, while foreseeable extras - such as dealing with a seized connection or replacing more pipe - should have a stated price or clear pricing method. If exposure shows more damage, the plumber can explain the options and get approval before expanding the job. Keep a targeted repair distinct from broader replacement so the latter isn’t treated as automatic.

For example, a hypothetical quote could cover replacing the named exposed section for a fixed price, then list a per-section price for any additional damaged pipe found after opening it. The plumber would pause, show what changed, and get approval for that added work before proceeding; the wider replacement wouldn’t silently become part of the original scope.

What findings after exposure would make broader replacement a reasonable alternative to adding the damaged section to a targeted repair - for example, damage continuing beyond the accessible area or several compromised connections? I’d want the quote to show those as options with their scope and price, rather than treating one extra section as automatic justification to replace the whole line.
