Water shows up around the faucet base only while it’s running
What observations best narrow down a kitchen faucet leak that appears around the base during use? Does it matter whether water shows up there only while the faucet is on, or also when it’s off?
I’d also like to know how to tell whether water is escaping from the faucet body or a connection beneath the sink, versus splashing down from the handle or spout. Where should the first visible water appear in each case? And if it’s wet under the sink, when is it better to stop using the faucet and call a plumber rather than keep tracing it?

If it appears only while the faucet is running, water may be escaping under pressure or splashing from the spout or handle; wetness that develops with the faucet off can point to a supply-side connection. Dry the area first, then watch where water appears: a trail from above suggests splash, while water beginning at a fitting under the sink suggests a connection leak. If water is actively collecting in the cabinet or you can’t locate and contain it, stop using the faucet; shut off its supply valves if accessible and call a plumber.
