Is a sink P-trap cleanout plug worth the access?

A removable cleanout plug can make a trap easier to service, but it also adds a sealed joint under the sink. How much does cabinet clearance affect whether that access is genuinely useful, especially if the plug is awkward to reach or a container won’t fit below it?

I’m also curious whether plug material and seal design make much difference to long-term reliability. What signs at the plug would suggest its seal is starting to fail, and when does the added access become more trouble than it’s worth? I wouldn’t expect the plug itself to prevent clogs; it’s about service access.

I’d favor a cleanout when you can reach it comfortably and place a container underneath; both affect whether the access is actually usable when servicing the trap. If the plug is awkward to reach or there’s nowhere to catch the water, I’d lean against adding that joint unless the easier access is especially valuable. It’s access, not clog prevention.
