Plumber emergency: DIY quick fixes or call the pros?

I'm mostly with you on the one-hour rule, but I'd add another factor - how much water are we talking about? A dripping faucet, sure I'll DIY that. But anything involving pipes behind walls or under floors... nope. Learned my lesson after a "minor" fix turned into tearing out drywall. Plus, eco-wise, leaks waste way more water than you'd think. Sometimes getting a pro actually saves money (and sanity) long-term.

True, but honestly, I've found that even the pros can sometimes make things worse before they get better. Had a plumber come in for what seemed like a straightforward leak under the sink - ended up with water everywhere and a bill way higher than expected. Not saying DIY is always the answer, but I think it's worth at least trying to diagnose the issue yourself first. YouTube tutorials have saved me more than once.

Also, about leaks wasting water... totally agree they're bad eco-wise, but realistically, if it's just a small drip, waiting a day or two to see if you can handle it yourself probably won't cause an environmental disaster. Obviously, if water's gushing out or pooling behind walls, that's another story entirely.

Guess my point is: don't underestimate your own ability to fix minor plumbing issues. Sure, know your limits - but don't automatically assume calling in a pro guarantees smooth sailing either.

Years? Heck, I hit my threshold about 15 minutes into my first DIY plumbing attempt. Thought I'd unclog the bathroom sink - ended up flooding the cabinet beneath. Now I just skip straight to calling backup... lesson learned.
