Why does swapping out a busted ice maker cost so much?

Yeah, those plastic clips are the bane of my existence. I swear, they get more fragile every year. I get why people balk at the price, but it’s not just popping in a new part anymore—one wrong move and you’re hunting for a tiny connector that costs $3 but takes forever to ship. Plus, half the time you’re working in a freezer that’s colder than a meat locker. I’d love to see a design that doesn’t require three hands and nerves of steel.

You and me both. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve dropped a clip into the abyss behind the freezer drawer. The real kicker is when tenants think it’s a five-minute job—if only they knew. I’ve started keeping a stash of those $3 connectors, but of course, it’s always the one I don’t have that breaks. Honestly, I’d pay extra for a model that uses actual screws instead of those plastic tabs that snap if you look at them wrong.

Right? Those tabs are a nightmare. I once had a tab snap and the whole assembly just dangled there until I could get a replacement. Ever tried to fish out a broken piece from under the coils? Not worth the risk. Has anyone actually found a brand that doesn’t use those flimsy connectors, or is it just wishful thinking at this point?

Yeah, those plastic tabs are just asking for trouble. I’ve had a couple snap on me too—once it actually fell into the fan area and I had to unplug everything just to fish it out. Honestly, I’d rather deal with a few screws and know it’s secure. Haven’t found a brand that’s ditched the tabs completely, but if you do, let me know... I’d pay extra just for peace of mind.

I get the frustration with those plastic tabs, but honestly, I kind of prefer them over a million tiny screws. Ever tried to line up a screw in a cramped freezer compartment while your hands are freezing? Not my idea of a good time. The tabs are flimsy, sure, but at least they’re quick—unless they snap, which, yeah, happens more than it should. Maybe the real question is why they can’t just make a sturdy clip system that doesn’t feel like it’s made out of recycled soda bottles...
