“Sometimes you gotta play detective.”

Ain’t that the truth. I once found a vent blocked by a stack of board games—tenant swore the heat was broken. Turns out Monopoly was just hogging all the airflow. Duct tape and common sense go a long way.

Had a similar thing happen, except it was a pile of laundry blocking the return vent. Folks just don’t realize how much that messes with airflow. Sometimes I wonder if people ever look behind their furniture. Ever had to deal with someone who swore up and down the thermostat was broken, but it was just a dirty filter? That seems to be the classic one in my experience.

Had a customer swear their AC was haunted—turns out, their kid had stuffed a teddy bear in the vent. I’ve lost count of how many times it’s just a clogged filter or blocked return. People forget those things exist until the house feels like a sauna on one end and an icebox on the other. Sometimes I think half my job is just moving furniture and reminding folks to check the basics before panicking.

That’s exactly what happened to us last summer—one room freezing, the next one sweltering. I started wondering if it was some kind of ductwork issue, but it turned out to be a bookshelf pushed right up against the return vent. Do you think most folks realize how much furniture placement can mess with airflow? I’m always surprised how sensitive the system is to even small blockages. Makes me wonder if there’s a way to tell when airflow’s being restricted before it gets uncomfortable.

Funny you mention that—I've seen folks spend a fortune on duct cleaning or even new thermostats, only to find out it was a couch or rug blocking a vent the whole time. It’s wild how just a few inches can throw off the whole balance. I wish there was some kind of “airflow warning light” for houses, but usually you don’t notice until you’re sweating in one room and freezing in another. Sometimes I’ll use a tissue to check if air’s moving at the vents, but that’s about as high-tech as it gets for most people.
