Does greywater storage make sense for irrigation that’s only needed part of the year?

A storage tank could make greywater available when irrigation demand is intermittent, but it also adds treatment, maintenance, and a question of how long the water can safely remain stored before it needs to be used or disposed of. How do local requirements typically address storage time and treatment?

I’m curious how people weigh that against a direct-use design, where greywater is routed for immediate use but may not line up with seasonal watering needs. Are there site conditions or permitted-use limits that tend to rule one approach out? I’d rather not assume storage is allowed or worthwhile everywhere.

There isn’t a universal storage-time rule: local requirements may specify whether storage is allowed, how long water may be held, what treatment is required, and which uses are permitted. Direct use avoids holding water, but it doesn’t bypass restrictions on where or how greywater may be applied. So the local rules can change which design is workable, not just how it must be operated.
