Honestly, I’ve had to tape a “change filter or suffer” sticky note above my laundry sink. The manual makes it sound so simple, but I swear the gunk builds up twice as fast as they claim. Not sure if it’s just my water or what, but skipping a flush is never worth it... trust me, the smell lingers.

- Yeah, filter maintenance is way more frequent than the manual suggests, especially with older plumbing or if your greywater’s got a lot of lint and soap residue.
- Hard water can definitely speed up buildup—seen it plenty of times.
- If you’re using rainwater, check for sediment too. Even with pre-filters, fine grit sneaks through and clogs things up faster than you’d think.
- Pro tip: a quick rinse of the filter every week (even if it looks “clean”) keeps the stink down and extends the life of the main filter.
- I’ve noticed some brands overpromise on “self-cleaning” features... still gotta get your hands dirty.

I get the point about frequent filter cleaning, but I wonder if weekly rinsing is always necessary. I’ve been using a pretty basic setup for our greywater shower, and honestly, I only clean the filter every couple of weeks unless there’s a noticeable drop in flow. Maybe it depends on the amount of lint or soap you’re dealing with, but for a smaller household, it doesn’t seem to gunk up as fast as some folks mention.

Also, I’m not totally convinced that “self-cleaning” filters are a waste. I picked up a mid-range model a few months ago, and while it’s not magic, it does seem to cut down on the heavy scrubbing. Maybe it’s just buying me a little more time between deep cleans, but that’s still something.

Hard water’s definitely a pain, though. I tried using a cheap inline softener and it helped a bit, but I’m not sure it’s worth the extra cost if you’re really watching your budget. Sometimes old-school elbow grease wins out over all these fancy features.

Honestly, I get what you mean about not needing to rinse the filter every week—mine doesn’t clog up that fast either. But I did notice once when I skipped a few weeks, the smell got weird, even before the flow dropped. Maybe it’s not just about flow but also keeping things fresher? As for self-cleaning filters, I’m still on the fence. The one I tried just seemed to push the gunk around instead of really cleaning it.

On hard water, totally agree—those inline softeners are pricey and didn’t make a huge difference for us. Sometimes a quick vinegar soak does more for less money.
