I’ve noticed the same thing with copper—seems like it’s not as indestructible as folks think, especially with those random pressure surges. I’m curious if anyone’s tried integrating pressure regulators into their rainwater or greywater setups? I’ve been considering it, but I’m not sure how much it actually helps with longevity or leak prevention.

You’re spot on about copper not being bulletproof. I’ve seen way too many pinhole leaks crop up in older lines, usually after a few years of those surprise spikes. Pressure regulators are honestly a game changer, especially if you’re running rainwater or greywater through repurposed plumbing. They smooth out those nasty surges that can really stress the joints and solder points.

I’ve retrofitted a couple of setups for clients who were tired of chasing leaks, and adding a regulator made a noticeable difference. The pipes just seem to “settle down” after installation—less banging, fewer drips at the connections. It won’t fix corrosion or old age, but it sure helps with longevity and peace of mind.

Only thing to watch for is sizing—don’t go too cheap or undersized, or you’ll just end up with another headache. And yeah, sometimes you’ll hear folks say it’s overkill for low-pressure systems, but in my experience, the cost is worth avoiding water damage down the road.

That’s exactly what I noticed after putting one in my own place. The constant banging and rattling just… stopped.

One thing I’d add: if you’re running rainwater or greywater, you really need to keep an eye on what’s actually flowing through those pipes. Sometimes folks forget that debris or even small bits of grit can sneak in, and copper doesn’t love that over time. Filters before the regulator help, but it’s not a set-and-forget situation.

I do think some people overthink the sizing thing, though. Unless you’re running some wild setup, most off-the-shelf regulators are fine for a standard house. Just don’t cheap out on the install—bad joints will leak no matter what you do.

Totally agree on the filter thing—people always seem to forget that maintenance bit. I had a buddy who thought his system was bulletproof until his shower pressure tanked... turns out the pre-filter was basically a mud pie. Curious if anyone’s tried PEX instead of copper for these setups? I’ve heard it handles grit and pressure changes a bit better, but haven’t made the switch myself.

I get the appeal of PEX—cheaper, easier to run, and it does seem to handle some abuse. But I’ve had a couple rentals where tenants got a little too creative with “DIY” greywater setups, and the PEX lines ended up with weird buildup inside. Copper’s not perfect, but at least you can see corrosion or leaks coming most of the time. With PEX, it’s kind of out of sight, out of mind... which makes me nervous, especially if you’re not checking those filters as often as you should. Maybe I’m just old school, but I’d rather deal with a slow leak I can spot than a hidden mess behind drywall.
